Why hire a designer?

Activities related to our home, like building a new house, renovating an existing one, purchasing new furniture, etc. typically involve a lot of time, money and often stress. I can help reduce the time you spend on the process, I can save you money (whether it be through trade discounts or by avoiding rework) and most definitely having someone else to provide guidance and expertise will alleviate your stress. Having someone who can understand your needs and wants and translate that into a well designed space also means the end result is the result you want.


Trade Discounts?

I pass along my trade discounts 100% to my clients. I only want to be paid for the expertise and services I provide. I don’t want to make money off of the products and services I recommend for you, because that just doesn’t feel right to me. The great benefit of this is that my fees can be significantly offset by the discounts that are passed along to you. Trade discounts can range anywhere from 5-40% off retail and include a wide variety of items like furniture, flooring, paint, appliances and more.


What happens at the initial consultation?

For essentially all of my services, I require that our relationship begin with an initial consultation. This is typically about an hour in length and is a chance for you to ensure that I’m the right designer for you and for me to ensure that you’re the right client for me. Ideally, this will take place in your current home so that I can get a sense of who you are and your style at the same time.


Do I need a big budget to work with you?

Definitely not - I’ve worked with several clients with smaller budgets and it all just comes down to realistic expectations. There is always a balancing act between time, money and quality. So if you have a smaller budget, that’s totally okay, but that means that you may have to sacrifice quality if you want everything to come together quickly or put in more time and sweat-equity into getting that quality for less. What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept credit card (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) and e-transfers.

The only note on this is that when the payment is for a reimbursement (as in, I purchased your lighting for you on your behalf and you’re reimbursing me for that) I ask that payment be an e-transfer or if you do want to pay by credit card, I’ll just add the amount of the fee on so I don’t lose money - because in that case, you are paying exactly what I paid since you get my pricing.


Do you charge an hourly or packaged rate?

For services that don’t have a flat fee associated to them, I will do a customized quote for your project. Typically, when we meet we’ll discuss if you have a preference for paying hourly or if you’d like a package put together, and I’ll take that into account. There are some activities where I prefer hourly (like sourcing) and others where I prefer a package rate (when I’m putting together a design concept). At the end of the day, it is what works best for both of us.


Why Hunter Douglas Window Coverings?

I carry Hunter Douglas window coverings because they are the preference of most of my clients - mainly for the brand recognition (re-sale value!), quality, design and excellent warranty. I understand that the brand is not always the best fit for every client and I will work with you to figure out what that best fit is. And if you’re only interested in Hunter Douglas window coverings, working with me also means that you have someone who not only understands the products but what will work best within your home from both a functional and aesthetics perspective.


Does my design style have to match yours?

Nope! As you will likely see from the projects I’ve worked on, I don’t just do one design style. My approach is to design in consultation with my clients. To take their aesthetic and make it work within their situation. I truly enjoy the collaborative process I take with my clients to create the best possible spaces for them where function and aesthetics go hand in hand.

Do you only work with your preferred tradespeople?

I have several individuals and companies that I work with regularly and am happy to recommend them for your projects. However, that being said, if you already have a contractor or other trade lined up I am open to working with them too! Depending on the scope of the project, I may require time to meet with them in advance to ensure that we’ll work well together.
