edmonton interior designer
Meet Kierstin Smyth
How it all began
I’m originally from the Alberta side of Lloydminster and moved to Edmonton when I was 18. I’d always planned on being a lawyer so studied Political Science but ended up with a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Political Science and History.
After working in that field in both the private and public sectors, I realized I wanted more… so went back to school, this time completing my Bachelor of Commerce majoring in International Business. This gave me the opportunity to move to the Dominican Republic to work for a multinational firm that focused on Hotel, Tourism & Leisure consulting.
I quickly realized the expat life also wasn't for me (let’s not even talk about heat and humidity!) and in order to figure out what it was I was meant to do, I picked up Marcus Buckingham's book: Find your Strongest Life.
While reading the book it all started to become clear.
I was the kid who built realistic houses out of lego
I was the teen who played The Sims just so she could build houses
I'd always been involved in our home renovations
My 2nd year dorm room was designed to include a "seating area"
I'd been reading home design magazines since forever
HGTV was life
Those were some pretty big clues that interior design was calling me! So when I moved back to Canada, I enrolled in the Residential Interiors program at the University of Alberta while consulting full time and a few years later, started Kierstin Smyth Design. The rest, as they say, is history.
Here’s a little secret for you…
I LOVE BREAKING THE RULES
While some magazines or designers will tell you to follow the trends, spend a fortune on certain pieces or never mix particular colour combinations, my approach is a little different. I believe that once you understand the rules, you can break them if it helps you achieve your vision. That timeless style beats short-lived trends any day. And that with a creative eye and plenty of experience, you can create your dream space even with a limited budget.
Oh, and did I mention I have a famous fur baby? While as a designer it’s important for me to share that my husband and I live in our 1950s semi-bungalow that we fully renovated in 2017/2018, most people we meet care more about our dog, Wallace. He’s a bit of an influencer and is regularly recognized when we’re out and about. Don’t worry, I won’t make you go searching - you can follow him here.
