How to Choose a Designer

Choosing a designer is a big decision and I want to give you my recommendations and tips for making the right choice for you and your home. There are so many amazing and talented interior designers in Edmonton, you just have to know what to look for!

Ask your friends / colleagues.

I love referrals because they are a great way for you to get an insiders look into what the experience was like working with particular designers. Be sure to ask questions like:

Were able to trust their designer? Did they feel they received great value? Was the designer able to push them just enough out of their comfort zone? Were they on time, communicated well and professional?

Take a look at their portfolio.

You want to find someone whose style you resonate with.

While most of us can work with a variety of styles, you’ll see general themes when looking at their body of work. Ensure that you vibe with their work.

Is their work more timeless or trendy? Do they incorporate colour or tend towards neutrals. None of these are right or wrong, you just need to ensure they are right for what you want.

Follow them for a while on social media.

This is a great way to get a sense of their personality.

You’ll get a sense of how they work. What their quirks and interests are. The types of projects they are currently working on and likely some behind the scenes too.

Reach out and start engaging with them as well - it’s never too early to start building that relationship!

Interview them!

Your preferred designers should be more than happy to chat with you. I know I like to do this because I also want to ensure the clients are the right fit for me too. I offer 20 min complimentary zoom calls for this exact purpose. We chat about the project, about you, my process, and discuss any questions you may have! It’s really important to have a good rapport with your designer because we usually need to get to know you very well. I’m often privy to a wide range of information on how my clients live and I’ll be a part of some very stressful moments in your life too (because, well, renovations).

Ask about their terms and policies

Not all designers run their business the same so it’s important to understand their process.

How is the majority of communication done? What are their payment terms and what forms of payment do they accept? How do they handle purchasing and contractor arrangements? How will the deliverables be, well delivered? What is the process if the relationship has to end? Do they pass along trade discounts, split them or neither? How will the collaborative process work?
